Email notifications for added news are not sent in Redmine

This article is for Redmine 2.2 and earlier. In Redmine 2.3 and later, all members of the project are notified when news is added, except for members whose "Email notifications" setting is "No events" (#4700).

Symptom

Email notification for added news is enabled in "Administration" → "Settings" → "Email notifications". However, when new news is added in a project, no email is sent to the members.

Cause

The notification email for added news is sent only to users whose "Email notifications" setting in "My account" is "For any event on all my projects".

The default value of this setting is "Only for things I watch or I'm involved in". For this reason, users who have not changed the setting are not notified.

Solution

If you install the notify_news_every_member plugin, Redmine always sends the notification email for added news to all members of the project. The "Email notifications" setting in "My account" has no effect on this.

In Redmine 2.3 and later, all members of the project are notified when news is added, even if you do not add the plugin. The exception is members whose "Email notifications" setting is "No events" (#4700).

How to install

If the git command is available

Run the following commands in the Redmine installation directory, and then restart Redmine.

cd plugins
git clone https://github.com/farend/redmine_notify_news_every_member.git

Note: For Redmine 1.4 and earlier, move to vendor/plugins and not to the plugins directory.

If the git command is not available

1. Download the tarball of the plugin from the following URL.

https://github.com/farend/redmine_notify_news_every_member/tarball/master

2. Extract the downloaded tarball in the plugins directory under the Redmine installation directory.

tar zxvf farend-redmine_notify_news_every_member-21d2458.tar.gz

3. Rename the directory created from the tarball to redmine_notify_news_every_member .

mv farend-redmine_notify_news_every_member-21d2458 redmine_notify_news_every_member

4. Restart Redmine.
